Did you know that at age 25 every person begins to loose half a pound of muscle per year for the rest of their lives? Yes, it's true. So why is this a bad thing? Well, for starters muscles are vital. They are what help carry your body around, they give you strength and stamina, they help your body burn fat and they provide energy to name just a few valuable benefits.
So how can you reverse the process of muscle loss? The solution is simple. Add resistance and weight training to your weekly exercise and lifestyle routines. For example, running is a resistance activity. You not only get a cardio workout but since you are using your muscles to support your body you are also building muscle mass. Yoga is another example. Since you are holding poses that require strength, you not only stretch your body but you also build muscle mass. And there is of course the traditional method, which is using weights to build muscle. Weight Training provides the highest increase in muscle mass. Doing all three, running, yoga and weight training is a great combination.
Also, and very important, in order to build muscle mass you need to consume protein. Foods such as beans, nuts, vegetables and animal meat provide different amounts of protein. A sample day could include an egg omelet with grilled veggies for breakfast, a bean soup and a side salad for lunch and grilled chicken with vegetables for dinner. A combination of vegetarian and animal protein meals weekly is ideal to keep or increase muscle mass and to maintain an ideal weight!
To sum, besides all the essential benefits of maintaining muscle mass one of the best outcomes is that a person looks great and healthy!
